This zero was very different, and much stronger, than the previous “zero.” I asked her to linger for another set of eye movements on the feeling of being completely without urge for cigarettes, just to help her place this feeling more clearly in memory. Then I asked her to access the physical sensations of the Positive Goal State by just doing the alternating taps on her shoulders. This tapping tends to bring up the positive feelings of the “day in the future” resource, even without naming this resource. These positive feelings, then, are strengthened as a new association to the previously powerful smoking trigger.
JK: Just realize, this is what total zero feels like. [EM] In the restaurant, see the pack of cigarettes in front of you, hold that picture in your mind and again, tap your shoulders, and just be there. Just enjoy being there. (Alternating shoulder taps)
JK: That’s good. That’s good. What would you say that you are seeing today? You may be surprised to be able to see something.
Hunaida: You mean what happened today? I’m going to say… I’m going to open my mouth and say [laughs]—I was thinking of the pictures, and I was into it, and I was completely into it, and I feel much stronger. I feel strong and free of something that was holding me.
JK: Just think of that. [EM]
Installation of the positive cognition, and an interweave to help the client generalize to other triggers.
JK: Right now, just let yourself go through all the other triggers, just think of them. You don’t have to make yourself feel any particular way but just think of that feeling—I am strong. And think of as many triggers as you can think of right now. [EM] That’s good. And what are you getting?
Hunaida: I feel like I can do the same in those other situations, the same as I did in the restaurant.
JK: Good. And again, think of those. Think of each one. Pause with each one so you can really get a sense of how you can be strong in that situation. [EM] That’s good.
Hunaida: Okay. [nods head] I can be strong. I am strong.
JK: Stay with that. [EM] So, is this a good stopping point for today? (Hunaida: Yes.)
